Fosters Urgently Needed inhumane shelters
Fosters urgently wanted, People surrender their dogs and cats every day to USA kill pounds. Current estimates on the low end are 10,000 pups and cats per day. When a family or individual surrenders a pup or cat to a US “shelter,” they have no idea that owner surrenders are killed first. Most don’t even realize that the animal they surrendered will be killed. They are fooled by the rather duplicitous title of “shelter.” There are very few no-kill shelters in the USA–most are nothing more than kill pounds.
Rescues–with the help of adopters, transporters and fosters get animals out and into loving homes. But the most important lifeline in this never ending revolving door of surrender and death, are the fosters. They are the bridge of respite that allows rescue groups to find the best possible adopter or family for the pup or cat on death row.
Fosters out there waiting For you today
Most Europeans and Animal Advocates from the UK and elsewhere are aghast at the numbers of dogs and cats dumped to die in kill pounds across the USA. Estimates vary but figures range from between 3.65 – 6 Million. Yes that’s right–10,000 every day. Besides the obvious reason for betraying their companion-disloyal, throw-away mentality–the biggest stumbling block at re-homing these companion animals is the lack of available fosters. Most rescue groups operating out of the USA do not have a brick & mortar location.
They operate out of their homes and rely on fosters and a local foster network to take the pups and cats out of the kill pound and care for them until suitable adopters can be found. Every successful rescue group has a reliable foster program and network. In larger cities, such as Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Miami and Memphis, dogs and cats on kill lists have literally hours to be re-homed.
If the kill pounds offered a paid foster program, they would not only be doing a great service to the animals on Death Row, but would pass an olive branch to the local rescues and the animal advocates cross-posting for these animals. That’s all for now from Moishe’s Mom.

A brilliant narrative of exactly what goes on Wynne ,this lays out the facts and not the lies people are told. The reality is heartbreaking ,and thousands of deaths unnessacary also.TY
Fostering is the #1 key to a successful rescue effort. We provide a safety net while the other components are put into place,ie. pledging, transport, behavioral training & the forever home. We matter. Thank you Wynne!
Gail, you’re so right–without fosters the safety net for these abandoned dogs and cats would be gone. You have an amazing CV of life saving and so many you care for in your colony. You’re a true animal warrior. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Sharon. Thanks for your comments. I think it’s a misnomer that all rescues have an actual physical location. Very few do and that’s why a strong foster network is needed to help save as many dogs and cats as possible.

Sharon, thanks so much for your comments. It is an awful state the US shelters are in. I hope to see sweeping change in my lifetime.
Not only has Wynne given an on point account of the US population’s shameful surrendering of loyal and loving cats and dogs, but also the horrors that are the reality of a companion animal that finds itself in a high kill shelter.
Fosters are the life blood of any rescue…without them the animals languish, at times in great pain, at the kill shelter until their number is up.
I hope that in publishing this article, light will be shed on a solution to this heartbreaking issue.
Oh hello dear friend. Your organization does incredible work with saving the unloved and unwanted. And you do long distance saves, so in addition to temporary foster arrangements, a network of caring reputable transport services are paramount. The USA is a large landmass and finding the right transporter is so important to you. Thanks so much for leaving a comment.

This is so heartbreaking and terrifying that innocent animals are being killed. I had no idea of how high the numbers have got. Fantastic article loved it.
Thank you Miss K. It is heartbreaking. I believe that by spreading awareness more will become aware and make it a point to force legislators and law makers to put forth a national bill for a humane shelter system with no euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. Thanks for leaving a comment and check back here for more to come.
I can attest to the real joy of being a foster mum to 13 dogs. Dogs who were dumped and taken to shelters. I began with 1 in addition to my own golden. 1 became 2 and very soon after, another 2… I am pack leader and I never had any problems with socializing my pack. If I had the space I would like to adopt more needy animals.
Claire, I know your heart is so pure and open for the lost, the unwanted and the unloved. I see your responses to my tweets and I know how heartfelt and honest they are. Thank you for loving these sentient beings. I know that you mean it when you say “…if I had the space I would like to adopt more needy animals.” Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

This is the stark reality of the urgency in the USA. The figures truly speak for themselves.
So many abandoned/Owner surrendered pets that are cast aside without thought or wonder of consequence.
The levels are extreme – trusting pets are at home one day and dumped the next. Their turmoil is vividly apparent whilst they are kennelled at the Shelters…a once calm, sweet natured animal can instantly revoke its tender personality to become fearful – thus causing it to be ‘labelled‘ aggressive.
This in turn, pushes them closer to the Euth Room – giving them least chance of survival.
Adopted animals if returned are always put at a ‘higher risk’ of Euthanasia – so their chances of ‘getting out’ are few.
Many animals are only, as stated…given a few hours.
This is why Fosters are so important…a lifeline for these beautiful animals that so deserve the chance to find love. Many of which have been abused and are terrified of any human interaction, can be, with the right care, shown that humans can indeed be trusted and that not all are cruel. It takes time for them to readjust so they must be permitted to decompress in their own time.
Foster care is such a huge part of this. The pet is taken from its noisy kennel, of which is detrimental to its psyche – into a home and allowed to come back to its former self…happy, self assured and relaxed.
It may take a short time, it may take longer but they in time can be rehomed & go on to live normal contented lives.
The need for Fosters is dire – if more people would only consider helping, the rewards are bountiful.
To save a life of an unwanted pet leaves you with such a feeling of worth…to know, that if if not for you, that pet would almost certainly be dead.
Many advocates push daily to get them the help they need by posting on Social Media. Whatever Country they originate from is besides the point because the animals faces are being seen and so so many have been helped by cross posters.
However…the point is this – if a Rescue does not have room to board an animal and has no Foster to release it to – there is no resolution.
It’s simply not a case of just rescuing the pet – there is so much more to it.
The reality is heartbreaking & the situation dire.
Absolutely Morgan–I’m with you 1 trillion percent. You know exactly the predicament we are in in the USA–need a stronger more cohesive foster network. You work so diligently for the pups and cats. Your tweets are poetry and your memorials to those gone are so ingrained upon my heart. Their faces wouldn’t get out without your tenacity and diligence every day. Thank you so much for your eloquent reply.
Thank you Wynne for all that you have done and continue to do for the plight of the animals.
You are a huge voice for these poor cast away pups and cats & they need all the help they can get because of the society we live in today. They cannot lose with you on side – of that I am certain. Bless you

A much needed article to raise awareness among owners and hopefully the public generally, of the odds against a dog or cat being adopted out of the shelter system. The real desperate need for foster homes to give more animals the chance and time they need – and stop the multitude of perfectly healthy, adoptable pets losing their cruel race against the clock in the current shelter lottery.
Oh Gina…so spot on as always. You understand the dire need for a solid foster network–possibly a national foster network. I’m sure there is a similar need in the UK just not as voluminous as the US pound system. Thanks for fighting for the voiceless. And thanks for your comment.
Excellent summary Wynne. You have laid it out in simple terms for all to see and read. You are right about us non Americans being shocked by the numbers killed every day and I really do not like the way the pounds use the word euthanise. What the shelters do is they kill they do not euthanise. Thanks Wynne it is a pleasure knowing you and being part of the network exposing what really goes on at shelters
Thanks so much Sam. I use much stronger words for that they do at these pounds but for the blog I like to keep it family friendly. It breaks my heart every day. I know that you as well feel the same way. I am hoping rapid reform overtakes the US system. At least in my life time.
Hi everyone and welcome to new visitors, although my expertise doesn’t cover this niche collectibulldogs is proud of Wynne’s first contribution, we are family friendly but like to educate too and Wynne’s style is just what’s needed here to create varied content
