COLLECTIBULLDOGS JOHN BESWICK DORIS LINDER COMBO
Hi readers of collectibulldogs I hope your all safe and well out there in the big wide world, let’s combine a blog article with the skills of John Beswick and another amazing well known artist called Doris Linder.
Both of this artisans are of world known prestige except John Beswick Owned the company Beswick BeswicksU.K. website whereas Doris Linder was more of a composition artist that expressed herself through commissions from famous clients.
JOHN BESWICK LIKE FATHER LIKE SON
John Beswick was a brother and son to James Wright Beswick and had a factory in Stoke on Trent, they did not just make bulldog figurines but all the animals you can think of and more, I’m surprised at the amount of production that came from Beswick.
This changed in 1969 when Royal Doulton bought Beswick out and after 1969 if you have any pieces that look both like Royal Doulton and Beswick is due to this cross over, it wasn’t until the early 2000s when one of the newer larger companies bought the Beswick name out right.
BESWICK PIECES DOING WELL
In England where I’m from I constantly watch auction sites programs and even subscribed to many auction houses as a source of info and the past few years has seen an increase in what people are willing to pay for Beswick pieces.
I’m not sure if people that are meant to be “in the know” know that many of the Beswick animals were created firstly by the Beswick company and then when Royal Doulton took over they kept the rights to the models and just changed the back stamp.
JOHN BESWICK NOW WE SEE YOU
From the Buson Bulldog and Basford Champ (in its variations) to the puppies and then to johns own signed pieces like the sailor by the pond, these all for some reason stayed as Beswick But Royal Doulton did stamp a few of the seated larger pieces (vintage in box says (Royal Doulton) as well as make variations like the twin Bulldogs.
John Beswick and he’s work should be celebrated he was a bit of an underdog with the likes of Royal crowns Doulton and derby, and royal Worcester on he’s back all creating the same kinds of amazing porcelain products each with its unique niche.
JOHN AT AUCTION TODAY
Like all auctions it’s a gladiator arena where lust and money trump a lot of sane minds that first enter and I thought this watching one famous English antiques program but after researching I saw that collectors are now more savvy on John Beswick the Beswick company and the history behind him.
This has in conclusion meant that now when Beswick pieces are sold and I’m not just talking about the popular mass production pieces But Beswick as a whole, I’m guessing anything after 1969 still marked Beswick is now classed as rare even if just a mishap.
A WHOLE BESWICK COLLECTION
If you want to distinguish the differences between Beswick pieces and Royal Doulton then go flea market or boot sale shopping and find a couple of old pricing and catalog books I’ve seen them around but not sure what year they published till.
Doing this you can then see what Royal Doulton took from the buyout of Beswick and which pieces they went on to recreate but from the Beswick original model, Royal Doulton even used U.K. ceramics for a while and they were commissioned to create pieces I’m hazarding a guess here but up until the 2000s when the BESWICK name was bought outright.
THE AMAZING DORIS LINDER
Doris Linder loved the country side and this really shows in her work consecutively if you google Doris Linder you will come across amazing chunky cattle and an array of horses, Doris has put her hand to other subject matters but here lies her specialty.
Working out of Royal Worcester Doris had made a name for herself and by working for and not owning a company meant more advertising went into the work Doris Linder produced and her pieces not only command high prices she has her own museum now too Royal Worcester museum where you can get a better idea of the type of pieces she created.
DORIS LINDER ROYAL WORCESTER ENGLISHBULLDOG
Doris Linder was commissioned in 1964 to create a Bulldog Figurine for Mack Trucks they asked for 500 pieces to be made (wonder if they got the 500 from first moulding) This has to be one of Doris’s only domestic animals.
I think the idea to make these more collectible was to split the pieces 50/50 with the first two hundred and fifty getting special treatment, this included the name Mack on the figurine and it comes with a lovely smelling leather certificate. The piece is great (just like our New York piece) but much better made.
MACK THE DOG AFTER DORIS LINDER
Thats correct Mack trucks did go on to commission different artists to continue this trend and I will leave the opinion up to you, I’ve only found ne other that’s represents Mack trucks I think the artist had a good go but you can surely see who wins the likeness contest here
ROYAL WORCESTER WITHOUT DORIS LINDER
The giant at the time (royal Worcester) has had its own go at creating Bulldog figurines and I’ve found just three so far with their unique back-stamp, it does seem for most (especially newer artists) that recreating this breed NOT using older models can be problematic.
Please note as not to repeat content I’ve added the museum of Royal Worcester so anyone wanting to reminisce or check out Doris Linder her life and the amount this artist contributed all by herself WoW what a woman
This should be a guest post but I’ll add it here instead it’s an article on feeding larger canines

LASTLY
Last year the BBC contacted me about a bulldog program they were doing to cut a long story short they did not go any further with me A due to my mental health and B my collection sees bulldogs in a good light and if your bashing a breed the last thing you want is positively.
This Friday morning on England’s GMB or Good morning Britain Cathrine Tate will be on the show to continue with this bashing of the bulldog breed, GMB have started a sensible campaign on the life of greyhounds after racing but no German Shepard’s with parvo and arthritis, no deaf dalmatians or dobbermanns. BELOW IS MY RESPONSE TO HER PROGRAM AND BOYCOTT THE SHOW THAT MORNING.
