Let’s start by showing our sympathies and condolences to all effected by the horrible pandemic sweeping across each nation Bulldog money boxes pocket money Holders ! I never got pocket money did you.

we have rooted around and found a few different types of these bulldog money boxes, most are vintage or modern but we do have a few older versions and did not realise just how many we had here. Pocket money is the term used when a parent rewards their child with money.

And if that money didn’t end up in the sweet shop it would of been in a child’s savings and that’s where bulldog money boxes appear, the different kinds start from the antique or cast metal pieces there’s porcelain bulldog money boxes with that familiar lock and some without.

 

Not so hot today with health and safety children whom owned these money boxes could only get the cash out one way making the bulldog either rather special or disposable as the child takes dads hammer and gives the bulldog money box and good whack.

 

Bulldog money boxes cashing in !

Your young it’s the 60s or 70s or even younger and you see something that you’d like to buy and the only way to find out if you’ve saved enough is to smash the porcelain bulldog a pick up the money without getting cut by the shards created.

 

Im guessing it would of been down to mum back then to sweep up after but it does seem a shame to demolish a piece, i was a kid once and know how hard it is to save so the idea you’d have to break into your savings was a bit of a put off which is great if  you want to continue saving.

its nice to see such a different selection from different decades we did not realise just how popular they once were, the royal Doulton type is one of our favourites it’s not the best of colours but for a piece that’s about 110 years old it still looks the part.

we would not dream of smashing these bulldog money boxes and they remain a part of the collectibulldogs collection and gives us the idea to try and find more Victorian or antiques related to this niche.

 

Souvenirs and designers

There is a small market still out there for these pieces the makers of bulldog money boxes these days seem to be souvenir shops and designers, the days of storing money in this way has long gone though.

The children of today get most of what they want from their parents and any pocket money given out is usually spent within 48 hours so there’s no need to add these to anyone’s Christmas list it would be an unused gift.

we have enough here as to class as a sub collection but as for financial purposes there is no cash benefit within these pieces (no pun intended) I doubt some will still be here come Christmas as we get ready to donate out.

Recycling your boxes

steam punk to sequins and other such add-ons ! Why not recycle your old money boxes, now I’m not saying destroy your antiques but during lockdown if you have pieces like we’ve shown you can recycle or up-cycle.

On the other hand we would love to hear from anyone that still uses a bulldog money box or for that matter any type of piggybank to save their money in it does seem like something from the days of old but you never know.

The last piece is literally from Russia with love ! This cute bulldog money box was a present from a lovely lady I met a few years ago it came with some miniature bulldog paces and is one of our most ornate pieces to date.
